Since my iPhone has decided to die this evening, and Rogers’ best answer for fixing it was to – get this – jailbreak it…
It turns out that because I have a 3G and I’m over a year into my contract, I’m eligible for upgrading to an iPhone 3GS – but only until September 15th… or more concisely – 2AM on September 16th. After that – it’s late 2010 when I’m next eligible…
The other options were a “refresh” 3G for nearly $400 (+3a), or a new 3GS for over $650 (outright) or a new 3G for … $400 (+3a)
In other words, I had less than 30 minutes to decide, and since I waited on hold for about 35 minutes this evening, I didn’t really see any point in waiting until morning to decide. I’ve ordered a 32GB 3GS for $299 – which puts me on the hook for 3 years (… on my voice plan. My data plan is on a 3a from LAST August – it doesn’t get extended – how confusing is that?)
‘course they’re all back-ordered, but I should get it come October.
I’m still going to the Apple Store tomorrow to see if they can resuscitate my phone in the interim.
If they can, I then have a couple options: Cancel the upgrade & contract extension, Keep a spare, Sell the 3G, or apparently “sell the 3GS for easily twice what you paid, on Kijiji or Craigslist” (so says the 2nd Rogers agent I dealt with)
Hmm… I’d better dig out one of those Motorola Razr V3’s I’ve got lying about.
