Friday evening update on Stef

Rough night for the kid. Got a dose of Cipro. He was in pretty bad pain when I got to him just before noon today, 8/10. A subcu shot of Dilaudid later, he was high as a kite, barely conscious… of pain too.

After an intermidably long wait, Stef finally got his private room; a nice change from the ER and observation areas. Best decore and equipment the 70s could offer.

While the nurse was working him up, we hear a second Code Blue call… this one to the Nurse’s Lounge… which freaked out pretty much all the staff – the halls got very quiet for a while. Turned out it was a mock code, but the first one wasn’t… 🙁

Incidentally, we found out an air embolus apparently won’t happen from a few stray bubbles in your I.V. line. They say the whole line could be un-primed and most (generally) fit people could handle it anyway. So no worries about the bubbles we saw.

By dinner he was feeling no abdominal pain and felt the Dilaudid had worn off, but he was starting to get a splitting headache as Laura was leaving, they were going to give him Tylenol… hopefully he’s feeling better now. He’s certainly feeling cut off – no cellphone, no internet or WiFi; theoretically he has a TV and possibly phone service. He’s was drifting in and out of consciousnous when I was there, so hopefully he won’t notice much passage of time. I did take him a bunch of stuff to keep busy/distracted, but he’s not in any shape to do much.

In general it looks like he won’t be having surgery any time soon, but he’s still NPO (not allowed to eat) – not that I think he’s got much of an appetite, just thirsty.
