Tech Support FAIL

This entry sounds techy, but really it’s not about that. Just last week I had to help migrating one of my clients, who’d been acquired, over to their new mega-corp network… speaking with one of their former employees this morning

<Lukas> hey, I heard you had fun at $INITECH recently
<Myke> yeah
<Lukas> you had to teach them about routing, etc
<Myke> no no
<Myke> I didn’t teach them
<Myke> I _schooled_ them.
<Lukas> LOL
<Myke> yeah, it was worse dorkery than when we were dealing with that Cool Dude from Magma last year
<Myke> guy in Texas didn’t know the difference between NAT, Routing and Firewall rules.
<Lukas> LOL
<Lukas> and that is a HUGE billion dollar company
<Lukas> they love M$
<Myke> techs weren’t allowed to change DNS
<Myke> the guy couldn’t understand the VLANs
<Lukas> yeah, we had a nice little setup there and they just ripped it all out
<Myke> and when I found the config entry that caused us 3 hours of debugging
<Myke> he got _really_ quiet.
<Lukas> ha ha

Replace my fantastic setup… you know what it took to get it running?!

But really – this is just an excuse to talk about the Cool Dude from Magma.

The story is about a year old, the day Samsam was born actually; These guys had moved to a new office and contracted me to help set them up with a new router and get the overall network going. New office came pre-connected to Magma… but we needed a few things reconfigured. We called Magma, had a difficult first call, whereby the agent basically just said he’d call us back. With nothing to do, we went to lunch.

I missed the call back, but here’s the voicemail:

Back at the office, the 5 of us crowd around the speaker phone – hoping they can make these changes today so we can enjoy the rest of the day, but it’s really not sounding like it…

I’m not sure if this guy loves his job, us, or just gets that enthusiastic about everything… but damn, that was funny.

Rep: Stay with me lukas

Lukas: yep

Rep: thank you sir

{long silence}

Rep: *mumbles* Let’s open that…. Okay now what I have for you lukas

Lukas: mmhmm

Rep: is that, you know, because I, myself, for… I tried my best, so I send that to other- upper level

Lukas: mmhmm

Rep: now what I’m being to advise you that your issue normally is several teams have to work on that, so it’s the sales dept and the provisioning dept, and that can only be done on monday, because right now, uh, sales, they’re not open right now, y’know what I mean?

Lukas: okay

Rep: that only can only be done, y’know, at my level, I tried my best [??] came back to me saying, that that, this is the channel [???] you have to do thru right now

Lukas: okay

Rep: I’m so sorry about that. Now Lululukas, as you were talking to Myke before, can I suggest something because it has to go thru sales on Monday

Lukas: mmhmm

Rep: to avoid confusion because I did capture the information [???] Myke gave me and then put in the ticket

Lukas: yep

Rep: can I just give you like that email address? you can send the request y’know , official request on that as written and I’m going to put that in your ticket back, y’know what I mean?

Lukas: okay

Rep: so it’s corpsupport@…

Lukas: mmkay

Rep: and in the reference, in the subject put my name Seshen

Lukas: okay

Rep: okay lukas? just shoot me that I’m going to put that in your ticket and then again, the sales guy- because several teams need to work on that, know what I mean?

Lukas: yeah

Rep: have to call [???] and I also left a message on Myke’s cell number

Lukas: okay

Rep: sounds good?

Lukas: yup

Rep: okay man buddy so, I’ll be waiting for your email […] know what I mean?

Lukas: but you just want us to email you and tell you what we want?

Rep: yeah, just you know because if-

Lukas: but then we still have to talk to the sales rep on monday?

Rep: no you don’t have don’t have, what I’m just saying, it will be sent, it’s already been sent, right now, to the sales coordinators, y’know what I mean. just to avoid confusion, on your requirements – y’know because we’re talking about IP blocks and so on and so – y’know what I mean?

Lukas: okay

Rep: if I get something official, that would be so sweet from you

Lukas: okay

Rep: you know… you pick up the phone eh?

Lukas: yeah, got it

Rep: you and myke buddy, you’re a good guy man eh

Lukas: yeah you too

Rep: I do appreciate your understanding on the matter man

Lukas: okay

Rep: you and myke, are good guys man

Lukas: alright

Rep: okay alrighty my man, take it easy have a nice weekend

Lukas: yeah

Rep: and I’ll be waiting for your email, in case I don’t get it, I’ll call you back

Lukas: okay

Rep: okay?

Lukas: see you Seshen

Rep: just shoot me the email and put my name in the subject Seshen

Lukas: yeah

Rep: okay my buddy

Lukas: will do

Rep: take it easy man
