She doesn’t know the words

But she tries to hum along… or at least peep.

All morning long I heard a peeping noise from the outside, I assumed it was just some bird, but around noon my father calls me down…

Female Ruby Throated Hummingbird

She was sitting on our front stoop, no idea how long she’d been there, or what had happened, but clearly she wasn’t well. Scooped her up, tried to feed her, but that’s actually a lot harder than you might think…

You can lead a bird to nectar…

There’s some amount of irony that I was trying to photograph the 3 hummingbirds that darted around our garden all summer long (with no real success), and now, here I am – holding one in my hand. Ruby Throated Hummingbirds have an average weight of 3 grams… I couldn’t really feel anything but a slight bit of extra warmth in my hand. Adorable. Her tongue was remarkably long too, the one time she stuck it out. Iridescent green feathers on her back, my photos do it no justice.
Since I didn’t know what I could do to help, I took her to the Wild Bird Centre where they’ll hopefully be able to mend and care for her. I worry though, they said she looked pretty spent. 🙁
