If that’s what I(kea) can do for this space – imagine what I could do at home!
Actually, I’d already spent 2.5 days dissecting how the ‘network’ was setup… So many things I don’t understand:
- Why are there redundant DNS servers for a 6 person workgroup?
- Why does the machine that runs & stores date backups only have an 80GB HDD?
- Why is some other company managing NAT and (internal!!) DNS?
- Why are there 4 subnets in use? There’s only 6 ‘servers’…
- Why are there 5 different distros plus Windows going on?
- Why does Ikea use metric when my wrench-set is imperial?
I think it goes without saying I’ll be making some significant changes to the network. High on my list is to setup our own NAT/router/DNS/DHCP box, from there my land is only my land. Then I’ll see about migrating the boxes to use the same OS… likely FreeBSD 6. I don’t understand how if there were only 2 guys running this before that there’s Gentoo, Fedora, OpenBSD, Debian, FreeBSD and now I bring Slackware (on my laptop) to the table… was someone just having fun experimenting with distros?
Okay, it’s not that bad. It’s that the previous guy running the show is a hacker, and a good one (and I mean the good kind of hacker too), so everything has been implemented correctly. I think the problems stem from that he has no experience running a corporate/enterprise or 24/7 production network. Things are setup quite well, but I feel that a lot of the wrong things have been setup. I’m all in favour of keeping things running, but having redundant resolvers for a tiny workgroup just seems ridiculous to me… and many of the machines seem to do only one or two things, where they could be doing so much more (think box-consolidation.)
While I was waiting for someone to help with my Metric/Imperial problems, I saw this in the lobby of the building I’m in:

I’m guessing there’s a silicon fab in the building too – seems that “Avia Lasers” have something to do with making chips. “It is ideal for microvia drilling and a variety of other high-speed materials processing applications.”
I don’t know about you… but seeing a box that big with a waybill that has the word “laser” in it just makes me want it all for myself 🙂
I’m tired. Haven’t had a break all day. Been up since 0830, and I’m actually writing this at 0200. I back dated the post so it’s on the right day.
